Vitamin B12 is a supplement that easily dissolves in water and can be taken from seafood, meat, eggs, and dairy products. They can also fortify food. The vitamin is necessary to produce energy from fatty acids and red blood cells. They are also needed to create substances vital for the brain and nervous system.
When there is a lack of Vitamin B12, anemia can occur aside from impairment of the nervous system. Loss of memory and inattention will occur before these symptoms are observed. Due to this condition, the link between dementia and weakening of neural activity with vitamin B12 has gained some attention.
Research has shown that patients suffering from Alzheimer’s or dementia lacked vitamin B12 aside from having increased levels of homocysteine, which is caused by reduced levels of the vitamin. Other research indicate that patients given vitamin supplements show reduced levels of homocysteine but no improvement in the decline in cognitive ability.
Another study has shown similar results with the intake of vitamin B12 along with other supplements. Results show cognitive decline was not reverse despite different combinations of supplements for patients with dementia or patients with none.
While a number of vitamins have a suggested threshold for their intake, this does not hold true with vitamin B12, which is normally safe at any dosage.
Even as the lack of vitamin B12 has contributed decline in cognitive ability, it has not shown any proof of improvement when supplements of the vitamin are given to patients suffering from cognitive decline.
People who are in danger of suffering from the lack of the vitamin should consider taking supplements, especially vegetarians and people who take medicine to minimize acid in the stomach. Vitamin B12 can be acquired with a healthy diet including food items that contain the vitamin.
