Verizon (NYSE:VZ) is reportedly offering the HTC Thunderbolt unit for free for a limited period. Potential consumers will have until January 26 to purchase the HTC (TPE:2498) device for free with when they sign up for a two-year service contract.
Aside from the free HTC Thunderbolt unit, users will also benefit from free shipping that Verizon has included in the promotion.
The HTC Thunderbolt was reportedly a popular smartphone among consumers since it is reportedly fast even though it utilizes a 1GHz Snapdragon processor rather than a 1.4GHz dual-core processor that is utilized in a number of Android-powered devices.

The device is also on the heavy side and is a bit bulky compared to the more recently-released smartphones. The HTC Thunderbolt features a 4.3-inch WVGA display screen with a resolution of 480 by 800. The smartphone also features an 8MP camera at the back that is capable of recording 720p videos aside from a 1.3MP camera up front.
The HTC Thunderbolt is the first 4G LTE smartphone of Verizon and was initially offered in the market at a price tag of $250 nearly a year ago. However the service provider already has a number of 4G smartphones in its lineup including the Motorola Droid Bionic, Motorola Droid Razr, and the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
The HTC Thunderbolt was earlier considered as an iPhone killer and was able to give the Apple device a run for its money. The sales of the HTC Thunderbolt reportedly even equaled to that of the iPhone at some point in a number of Verizon retail outlets. Around 28 percent of stores that were surveyed showed the HTC Thunderbolt outselling the iPhone sometime in March.
Sales of the HTC Thunderbolt also reached around 260,000 units in its first two weeks in the market according to Verizon since it offered faster connectivity compared to some of the smartphones that were offered at that time.
