Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) is reportedly working on the next version of the Amazon Kindle e-reader which will feature a front-lit display. Current versions of the Amazon Kindle e-reader have an e-ink screen that does not offer color or backlighting. The upcoming version of the Amazon Kindle e-reader will allow users to read even in the dark since it will reportedly glow. This upcoming device is expected to be released within the year.
Sales of the Amazon Kindle e-reader have gone down to two million units for the first quarter of the year from the nine million in the last quarter of last year. The screen of the next Amazon Kindle e-reader will reportedly be illuminated enough that it can be read in the dark.
The lighting will be produced by shifting a bar towards the right to produce a cool light on the screen. It will reportedly be reflecting light instead of projecting light, which would reduce the harshness on the LCD and allow users to read without any problems.
Aside from the lighting, the upcoming version of the e-reader offering of Amazon may also feature a colored display. According to the Economic Daily News, Amazon ordered millions of six-inch color e-readers from E-Ink Holdings, a manufacturer of electrophoretic displays.
With the addition of color on the screen of the device, a number of consumers may potentially consider acquiring the upcoming version of the Amazon Kindle e-reader even as it will likely aim for a different demographic as the Amazon Kindle Fire.
Reports have also indicated that the flexible e-ink screen will be introduced by LG soon. The screen will be slim but durable enough that it will not need a protective glass over it. Despite the appeal of such technology, it may not be used on the upcoming version of the Amazon Kindle e-reader.
However with the reported enhancements that will be incorporated on the upcoming version of the Amazon Kindle e-reader, it may still find a market among the bibliophiles out there.
