Manufacturers may possibly have the capability of modifying their Windows Phone 8 devices if recent reports are proven to be true. According to reports, among the important topics in the agenda for an upcoming summit of Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) for its upcoming mobile platform hints at possible customization opportunities for manufacturers of devices using the upcoming Windows Phone 8 OS.
Listed on the agenda for the summit that will be held in the United Kingdom are “Customization and Differentiation Opportunities”. Basing on this topic for the summit, some industry watchers have concluded that manufacturers may be given the chance to modify the upcoming Windows Phone 8 OS.
However it should be noted that the report may not automatically mean that Microsoft will give manufacturers the opportunity to make changes on the Windows Phone 8 OS although it will likely offer an open environment for the Windows Phone 8 platform if it is indeed true.
Similar to Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), Microsoft has controlled the interface on the Windows Phone platform which has resulted to some objections among device manufacturers. Manufacturers would want to modify the platform to allow them to be different from other devices running the OS.
Apple on the other hand has not only controlled the software, it has also produced its own hardware, which offers the same device and user interface for all users of its devices.
Even as reports hint at the possibility of modifying the upcoming Windows Phone 8, Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) has allowed manufacturers to modify the interface of the Android according to their preferences. This freedom has given users more features than what is being offered by the Android OS itself.
Although there are a number of benefits in allowing customization, it may also result to problems on the platform as shown through some issues that affected the Android OS. Updates will also be dependent on the device, which prolongs the entire process.
It remains uncertain if Microsoft will allow the modification of the Windows Phone 8 OS although the company will have to collaborate closely with its partners to reduce if not eliminate any problems that may arise once the mobile platform is customized by the manufacturers.
No statements were released by Microsoft in connection to the report on the possible customization of the Windows Phone 8 platform.
