Diamond Pet Foods is recalling its Naturals Lamb Meal & Rice product voluntarily. Although there have been no reports of illnesses, the move is the company's precautionary measure because the product may be infected with salmonella. Other products manufactured by the company are not affected.
Those who handle dry dog food may possibly be salmonella infected particularly if they are not able to wash their hands thoroughly after touching surfaces that have been exposed to the product.
Individuals who are in good health must check themselves for one or more of the infection symptoms which includes nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal cramping and fever. In rare cases, salmonella may lead to more severe illnesses such as infections in the artery, endocarditis, muscle pain, arthritis, urinary tract symptoms and eye irritation. Those who are showing any of these symptoms after coming in contact with the dog food must consult with their healthcare providers.
Salmonella-infected pets may show symptoms of appetite loss, abdominal pain and fever. If the infection is not treated, pets may suffer from diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy and fever. Contaminated but healthy pets may be carriers and transmit the infection to humans or other animals. If the pet has eaten the product that was taken back and shows any of the symptoms mentioned here, owners are urged to contact their veterinarians immediately.
Diamond Naturals Lamb Meal & Rice was available to consumers in Florida, Alabama, Kentucky, Georgia, Michigan, Maryland, North Carolina, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia and South Carolina. Any of those states may have also offered the product to other states via pet food stores.
