Recent reports have hinted at a 2013 launch for the Xbox 720 of Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) while the PlayStation 4 of Sony (NYSE:SNE) may be introduced by 2014. However these reported release schedules for the Xbox 720 and the Sony PlayStation 4 remains speculative since no official announcements were made for the supposed release dates for the two devices by their respective manufacturers. A recent report also indicated that the launch schedule will for upcoming game consoles may occur in the next few years.
Apparently the information that led to the latest speculations on the release of the Xbox 720 came from a lawsuit that involved Activision (NASDAQ:ATVI) that resulted to the release of some of the details of the publishing agreement of the company with Bungie, a game developer.

According to the information, Bungie was expected to introduce “Destiny” a science-fantasy game by November 2013 for the Microsoft Xbox 360 and the Xbox 720.The agreement between Bungie and Activision also revealed that by 2014 a game designed for the PlayStation 4 will be released.
The agreement may have involuntary released the details about the release of the Xbox 720 and the PlayStation 4. The Xbox 360 has been in the market for the past seven years while the PlayStation 3 will be in the market for six years this year.
Representatives from Microsoft had announced earlier that it will not be introducing any new devices during the upcoming E3 gaming expo that will be held in Los Angeles. This may include the reported Xbox 720. The company typically introduces new products during the even although the Xbox 360 was introduced prior to the 2005 edition of the event.
Despite the revelations made through the contract, some industry watchers doubt the release of the Xbox 720 in the coming year. However with the recent developments and emerging reports, it may be possible for the upcoming game console to be introduced by the company by 2013.
