Earlier reports had revealed that a Google tablet may be under development although it remains uncertain if it will go up against the Kindle Fire of Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) or the iPad of Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL). However a report revealed that sources within the supply chain of Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) think that a $200 seven-inch Android 4.0-powered Google tablet was being developed to compete with the Kindle Fire.
Last month Eric Schmidt, the CEO of Google, revealed that a tablet will be released by the coming within six months time. The reported tablet will have the best quality according to Schmidt, which increased speculations on the Google tablet that initially came out early last year.
The iPad of Apple has outsold all other tablet devices in the market as a number of Android-powered tablets did not do well in the market. According to figures from NPD, Android-powered tablets did not do well against the TouchPad of HP (NYSE:HP), which was discontinued by the company last year.
The Kindle Fire of Amazon was able to take the second place in the market despite being available for only two months due to its price tag of $199. However Google will be able to enter the market with a Google tablet and set the standard with its partner tablet makers following its $12.5 billion purchase of Motorola (NYSE:MMI).
The reported Google tablet will likely find more challenges in the tablet market compared to the market for smartphones, where the Android OS has achieve a good amount of success. Google has two options with the reported Google tablet, it could enter either the high-end market which is dominated by the iPad of Apple or go into the market for media tablets where most of the profit would come from the content provided by the company.
Since no official confirmation was made by the company on the market that the Google tablet will enter, it will remain uncertain on whether it will go up against the Apple iPad or the Amazon Kindle Fire. The only thing certain is that the reported Google tablet will become the standard for other device manufacturers will follow in the use of the Android OS.
