Apparently Research In Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) aims to bring in more developers by offering a free unit of the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet for those who will be able to port their Android apps into the tablet offering of the company.

This was announced by the developer relations vice president of RIM, Alec Saunders, through Twitter. This marketing strategy comes as the company has labored to increase the interest of consumers on the BlackBerry PlayBook amidst declining sales.

The price of the BlackBerry PlayBook was recently reduced in the US market as it took out at least $300 from the initial price tag of the tablet. The 16GB model is being sold at $199 from the initial price of $499 while the price of the 32GB and the 64GB models were also reduced to around $249 and $299 respectively.

The initial price of the 32GB and the 64GB models of the BlackBerry PlayBook were at $599 and699 respectively.

All developers who have registered at the BlackBerry App World are qualified for the 16GB BlackBerry PlayBook once they are able to port their Android apps and send it to BlackBerry App World from February 2 to February 13. The BlackBerry App World Vendor Guidelines should be followed by the developers who wish to avail of the BlackBerry PlayBook promotion.

The Tablet OS 2.0 will reportedly be released by RIM within the month. This latest upgrade was previewed by the company during the recent Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show. The upcoming version of the platform will allow Android apps to be used on the BlackBerry PlayBook through the BlackBerry Runtime for Android apps.

The upcoming update will also offer native apps for contacts and email for the BlackBerry PlayBook, which were not included when the tablet was released into the market by RIM. Tools were published by RIM to make certain that the applications that the developers will create are compatible.
