During the pre-holiday period from November 25 until December 25, eBay has clocked $ 330 million worth of sales to mobile users. Sales volume from mobile applications of the site has grown considerably. International division of online auction site has recorded 166% growth and sales of $ 230 million, eBay America grew 134% with turnover of about $ 100 million

Of course the figures from the point of view of sales through mobile applications have shown a great growth during the festival season, but the fact remains that mobile shoppers constitute a very small fraction of eBay’s overall sales, which are not growing so rapidly. Thus, even a healthy growth of 166% in mobile sales doesn’t reflect much on the sales volumes of the company.

Talking about actual figures, in 2009 eBay had clocked $48.3 billion in Gross Merchandise Volume (the total value of all goods sold through eBay), excluding car sales, and for 2010 it is expected to cross the $50 billion mark. So GMV of $230 million is a very miniscule one when compared to eBay’s total sales.

The most sold categories through mobile applications (number of items sold) were: ‘clothing’, ‘footwear and accessories,’ ‘cell phones and PDA’, ‘antiques’, ‘watches and jewelry’, and ‘toys’ and ‘hobby goods’. Representatives of eBay say that in some countries, ‘clothing’ and ‘accessories’ topped the sales through the mobile applications in 2010. According to them, this is a result of the application Fashion app for iPhone, which was released in the summer of this year.

Looking at the growing popularity of smartphones, eBay can expect its sales through mobile applications play an important role in the future.
