Brave of Pixar Highlights Spirited Female Character

Brave is the first movie that was produced by Pixar that is focused on a spirited female character. The movie is about Merida, a young Scottish archer who breaks tradition by defying her own mother and does what she wants to do. However after a witch granted an unfortunate wish of Merida and transforms her mother into a bear, the girl has to work on bringing back her family.

Kelly Macdonald lends her voice to Merida, who is not the typical Disney princess waiting for her prince. According to Mark Andrews, co-director of the movie, Merida is a teenager who is in between being an adolescent and an adult.

Andrews indicated that one of the themes of ‘Brave’ is to follow one’s fate. The destiny of a person can be controlled if the person is brave enough to be able to look into oneself and discover what is inside.

Since its first animated film, ‘Toy Story’, in 1995, Pixar has grown to become among the more reliable studios in Hollywood. Twelve of the films produced by the studio generated over $7.2 billion in ticket sales around the world.

Industry tracking has hinted at the possibility for ‘Brave’ to open with around $60 million in ticket sales in the domestic market since a number of merchandise for the movie are already available in the market. The Grimms’ fairy tales served as the inspiration of the creative team for the movie.

According to producer Katherine Sarafian, the movie shows some of the consequences of the actions of Merida. The movie is also set in the ancient period, which offer new challenges for the team since the surfaces were not clean and sharp, which is normally preferred by the computer.

The movie took eight years to develop and required two trips to Scotland for research as the creative team had to study Celtic mythology. They had to study everything, mingle with the locals and listened to the rhythm of the local language.

The cast of the movie includes Billy Connolly, Robbie Coltrane, Craig Ferguson, Julie Walters and Emma Thompson.
