A New York Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) education event revealed the latest digital textbooks of the company, the iBooks 2. Textbook makers will have the capability of creating interactive titles using the iPad of Apple through the iBooks 2 service. Textbook pages can be opened by swiping across the display as well as watch movies inside the chapters.
Apple appears to concentrate on interactivity with the iBooks 2 as 3D images will reportedly be available to users which can be rotated to provide a better view. Users will have the capability of switching modes from portrait to landscape to make interaction with the text and images easier.
The titles can also be marked up easily through the iPad using the iBooks 2 service, which is similar to that of a real textbook. The text can be highlighted by the users and notes can also be added. The note can also be merged together to create study cards that are similar to flash cards.
Observers have also noted that Apple has already formed partnerships with a number of textbook manufacturers such Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, McGraw Hill (NYSE:MHP) and Pearson. Around ninety percent of US text books are reportedly published by these companies.
Five textbooks from McGraw Hill and a pair of Pearson textbooks are reportedly available through the iBooks 2 service.
Apple has also introduced a new application in order to encourage the development of textbooks. The application, iBooks Author, will allow users to create books and textbooks. Templates are used in creating books quickly although videos and images can be dragged and dropped into the titles along with Word files.
Users can download the iBooks 2 application into their iPad units from the Apple App Store. The price of the textbook is around $15 each although they can be downloaded again without any extra charges. The iBooks 2 app was made available by Apple recently and the textbook concentrate on math, science and other subjects.
