Recent reports have indicated that the noise reduction technology that is found on the A5 processor of the iPhone 4S of Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) may be the main reason why Siri cannot be ported into the previous models of the smartphone of Apple.
The technology found on the iPhone 4S is reportedly provided by Audience. This partnership with Apple came to light after an initial public offering that was filed by Audience recently.
The company mentioned on the IPO filing that it provides processors to Protek and Foxconn, which is a part of the 2008 agreement that the company has with Apple.
An earlier teardown of an iPhone 4 unit that was conducted by iFixit showed a chip produced by Audience. However the iPhone 4S has the earSmart technology that is built into the A5 CPU of the device. The earSmart technology is used in removing the background noise to allow better reception while making voice calls even with a noisy setting.
The IP was reportedly integrated into some smartphones offered by Apple since the 31st of December last year including the iPhone 4S.
A license was reportedly given to Apple by Audience for the technology being used. The company revealed that it will receive a royalty every quarter for the use of their IP on smartphones.
The recently released information has shed light to the reason why the iPhone 4S did not have an Audience chip. The recent reports also revealed the reason for the size of the A5 processor of the iPhone 4S.
This also showed the explanation why the Siri feature can only be used on the iPhone 4S and none of the older models of the iPhone. Although some users were able to port Siri on an iPhone 4 unit, the quality on the device has reportedly suffered since it used previous versions of noise-reduction technology.
